A golf cart that pulls hard to one side during braking isn't just annoying — it's a genuine safety issue. On a narrow cart path or a slope, a sudden yank toward a ditch or tree line can cause a loss of control fast. The good news is that brake pull almost always comes down to one of a handful of root causes, and most of them are diagnosable with basic observation before you ever pull a wheel.

Understand Why Pull Happens

Braking pull is fundamentally an imbalance problem. When one side of the cart is slowing the wheel more aggressively than the other side, the cart steers toward the stronger side. That imbalance can come from mechanical differences (worn or glazed components on one side), contamination (grease or fluid on a friction surface), cable or linkage tension that's mismatched side to side, or a seized component that's either dragging constantly or failing to engage at all. Narrowing it down starts with understanding what you're actually feeling.

Step 1: Characterize the Pull

Does the cart pull only when you apply the brakes, or does it also drift at speed without braking? If it drifts without braking, you may have a dragging brake or a wheel bearing issue rather than a pure brake imbalance. If the pull only happens under braking, you're almost certainly looking at uneven brake force. Also note whether the pull gets worse as you brake harder, or whether it's consistent regardless of pedal pressure. Severe pull at light pedal pressure that gets better at full pressure often points to a sticky caliper or a cable that isn't releasing cleanly on one side.

Step 2: Check the Brake Cables and Linkage

On drum-brake golf carts — which is the majority of them — the mechanical cable system is the most common source of pull. Each rear wheel has a cable that runs from the brake pedal or equalizer bar to the brake actuator at the drum. If one cable is frayed, kinked, or has a corroded section, it won't transmit force as smoothly as the other side. Inspect both cables along their entire length, looking for kinks, fraying near end fittings, rust, or places where the cable is rubbing against a frame edge. Also check the equalizer — the small pivot bar or bracket that's supposed to split pedal force evenly between both sides. If the equalizer is stuck, seized, or bent, one cable will always get more pull than the other. A simple check: with the cart on a flat surface and the parking brake off, pull each cable end by hand and compare how freely they move. They should feel nearly identical.

Step 3: Inspect Drums and Shoes for Contamination or Wear

Pull a wheel on each side and look at the drum interior and the brake shoe lining surface. Grease or oil contamination on one side — from a leaking wheel bearing or axle seal — will dramatically reduce braking force on that side, causing the cart to pull toward the clean side. Glazing (a shiny, hardened surface on the lining) on one side will do the same thing. Also compare the thickness of the lining material on both sides. If one side is significantly more worn than the other, the contact geometry is different and the braking force will be uneven. Drums should be round and smooth inside — deep scoring or an out-of-round drum will cause inconsistent braking as the shoes make uneven contact through each rotation.

Step 4: Look for a Stuck or Dragging Brake

Jack up each rear wheel individually, spin it by hand, and feel for resistance. A wheel that spins freely is releasing; a wheel with noticeable drag may have a shoe that isn't fully returning when the pedal is released. This can happen because of a weak or broken return spring inside the drum, a seized adjuster mechanism, or a cable that's too tight and isn't allowing the actuating arm to return to rest. Dragging brakes on one side will cause that side to slow the cart even when you're not touching the pedal, which shows up as a drift at speed and then a pronounced pull under braking as the extra heat and friction build up.

Step 5: Check Wheel Bearing and Tire Condition

A loose or rough wheel bearing on one side creates inconsistent wheel behavior under load and can contribute to pull. Grab each wheel at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions and try to wiggle it — there should be no play. Then grab at 12 and 6 and repeat. Any looseness points to a bearing issue that needs attention regardless of the brake diagnosis. Also make sure your tire pressures are equal side to side — even a few PSI of difference will cause pull under braking because the contact patches are different sizes.

When to Stop and Get Help

If you find contamination from a leaking axle seal, deal with the seal before you put new friction material in — otherwise you'll ruin the new parts quickly. If you find significant drum scoring or an out-of-round drum, the drum needs to be replaced rather than just patching the shoes. And if you've gone through all of these checks and the pull is still unexplained, have a shop put the cart on a level surface with wheel slip gauges — sometimes the issue is subtle enough that equal-force testing equipment is needed. Brake pull that you can't confidently diagnose and fix is not a problem to drive around with while you figure it out.
