Abuse your charger or ignore charging discipline, and a set of batteries that should last four or five years might give you two. The good news: once you understand what's actually happening during a charge cycle, the right habits become second nature. This guide covers how to charge golf cart batteries correctly, what to avoid, and how to recognize when something's going wrong.

Understand What Type of Batteries You Have

Before anything else, confirm whether your cart runs on flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries, AGM (absorbed glass mat), or lithium batteries. The charging requirements differ significantly. Flooded lead-acid batteries — still the most common in older golf carts — need a charger that can push them through a proper bulk, absorption, and float stage, and they require periodic water top-offs. AGM batteries are sealed and maintenance-free but can be damaged by chargers that run too aggressive a charge profile. Lithium packs require a lithium-compatible charger with a specific cutoff behavior — using an old lead-acid charger on a lithium pack is a fast way to destroy it or create a safety hazard. Use the Right Charger for Your Voltage

Golf carts commonly run on 36-volt or 48-volt systems, though other voltages exist. Your charger must match your system voltage exactly — a 36V charger on a 48V pack won't fully charge the batteries, and running a higher-voltage charger on a lower-voltage pack risks overcharging and damage. These batteries lose capacity permanently if they're run flat and left that way, even for a day or two. The best practice is to plug the charger in after every round or outing, regardless of how much charge you think is left. Deep-cycle lead-acid batteries are designed to be discharged and recharged repeatedly, but they prefer not to be taken below about 50 percent depth of discharge on a regular basis. Let the Charger Finish Its Full Cycle

A quality automatic charger goes through stages: bulk charging brings the pack up to most of its capacity quickly, then absorption charging tops it off at a lower current, and finally a float or maintenance phase holds it there without overcharging. Interrupting the absorption stage means your batteries never reach a true full charge, which over many cycles leads to capacity loss and shortened lifespan. Let the charger run until it signals completion — whether that's a light change, a meter reading, or automatic shutoff.

Check Water Levels in Flooded Lead-Acid Batteries

If you're running flooded lead-acid batteries, water maintenance is non-negotiable. The charging process drives water out of the electrolyte through gassing — that's the bubbling you might hear near the end of a charge cycle. Plates that are exposed above the electrolyte level will sulfate and fail. Check water levels about once a month or every few charge cycles, and top off with distilled water only — tap water introduces minerals that contaminate the cells. Add water after charging, not before, because the electrolyte expands during charging and adding water beforehand can cause overflow. Keep the level just above the plates but don't overfill.

Watch for Warning Signs During Charging

A functioning charger and healthy battery pack should complete a charge cycle in a predictable window — typically several hours depending on how depleted the pack was. If your charger is clicking on and off repeatedly, refusing to start, or running for an unusually short time without reaching a full charge reading, something is wrong. A single bad cell in one battery can prevent the whole pack from charging properly. If you smell rotten eggs (sulfur) during charging beyond the mild gassing normal in lead-acid batteries, or if any battery case feels hot or is bulging, stop charging immediately and have the pack inspected. These are signs of a failing battery or a charger fault, not something to ignore.

Storage Charging: Don't Let Batteries Sit Uncharged

If you're putting the cart away for winter or for an extended period, don't leave the battery pack in a discharged state. Fully charge the batteries before storage, and if possible, connect a compatible maintenance charger or trickle charger designed for long-term storage to counteract natural self-discharge. Lead-acid batteries self-discharge over weeks and months, and a pack that sits dead through a long off-season often can't be fully recovered. In freezing climates, a fully charged battery is also far more resistant to freeze damage than a discharged one — another practical reason to store your cart with a full pack.
