Understand What Type of Batteries You Have

Before anything else, identify your battery type. Most older and mid-range golf carts use flooded lead-acid (FLA) batteries — the kind you can open and add water to. Newer carts and upgrades sometimes use AGM (absorbed glass mat) or lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries. Lead-acid batteries self-discharge slowly over time, and sitting in a deeply discharged state causes irreversible sulfation. For long-term storage, many owners use a maintainer or trickle charger to keep the pack topped off — just make sure it's designed for the battery chemistry and rated appropriately for long-term use. Lithium packs have different storage recommendations, typically stored at a partial state of charge rather than fully topped, so follow the guidance specific to your battery type.
